A baby's cry is precisely as serious as it sounds.

the plot

Elijah and Jasmine are dealing with the challenges of becoming first-time parents, causing strain on their relationship. With little experience and minimal funds, it has taken a toll on both of them. Jasmine, exhausted and sleep-deprived has taken the bulk of the load caring for baby Issac. The pressures of fatherhood prove to be too difficult for Elijah to handle, he fears being unworthy like his alcoholic father was, and he becomes distant. Elijah suddenly disappears one night, deserting Jasmine and Issac with no warning. In his absence, a maniacal doppelganger takes his place unknowingly to Jasmine, and traps him in their basement. He watches as the doppelganger replaces him as a better father and boyfriend than he has been and this is the wake-up call he needed.

the team

Hi, we are second-year students creating a film for our Creative Screen Practice module. We want to create a truly eerie thriller, exploring themes of the struggles that can come with new parenthood and alcoholism within families, conveyed through a classic folklore myth.

Our inspirations

We have gained inspiration from many other short films about Doppelgangers and the extensive lore about Doppelgangers from folklore. In terms of visual and aesthetic inspiration we drew from the films below:

  • Get Out (2017)  largely inspired by this project for the thriller aspects and the use of repeated sound to create tension. The non-real space in which Elijah is trapped has been modelled off of the dark abyss Chris sinks into. Get-out plays with moving in between real and mental entrapment much like we aim to with our film.
  • Under the Skin (2013) visually aligns with our goals, the unsettling dark void that the characters explore helped us understand how to approach creating ethereal dreamlike spaces and how the characters would interact within them.
  • Help us succeed!!!

The donations will help us make the best project possible and we are grateful for any amount donated. If you cannot donate you can still help! Please share our project anywhere you can, on social media, via email or even through conversation. Every little helps!
