UPPERCUT
Our Project
Our project is raising funds to take our new musical to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. UPPERCUT is tackling the current social problems that define our generation as well as showing girls that they should be proud to ‘fight like a girl.’ The musical flips stereotypes, foregrounds mental health and shows the importance of loving yourself.
We’re really excited at the prospect of taking our musical to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and we’d love it if you could support us and help us make it happen!
The Musical
UPPERCUT: a new musical! Talented but troubled Clio has three months to go until the biggest boxing match of her life. She must find ways to overpower the emotions of envy, anger, grief and anxiety if she wants to have the confidence to win the fight. With a loving mother, a dedicated coach and the memory of her late father, can Clio reach her full potential and overcome her insecurities, or will the feelings that are holding her back take over?
UPPERCUT reminds us not to compare ourselves to others, despite living in a society that is dominated by social image and popularity. Instead, the musical portrays paragon of female power and strength in dealing with mental health issues.
Along with this heart-warming a story comes a collection of musical songs to make the audience smile, laugh and cry - but we need your help! The cast and production team will be taking UPPERCUT to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August and would greatly appreciate it if you were able to make any donations to aid us in this process. Your money will go towards all things musical theatre including sets, costumes and lighting and help us to make this musical as good as it can possibly be.

Our Story
Having had first-hand experience of growing up in a generation where there is an increasing pressure to look and act a certain way, due to the effect of social media, we wanted to portray the impact that this can have on girls.
Our central protagonist is a sportswoman and she is faced with overt sexism in the musical, which is unfortunately still prevalent in today’s society. Although women have been liberated in many ways, there are still indisputable stereotypes regarding what women should and shouldn’t be doing and we will be challenging this in UPPERCUT.
Finally, we wanted mental health at the forefront of our musical, which is portrayed through Clio’s relationship with anxiety. 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health issue at some point in their life and we wanted to explore why this is effecting so many young people. Clio eventually finds ways to manage her anxiety, as well as feelings of anger, envy and grief at her father’s death. Our hope is that the audience will go on this journey of self-discovery with her and will come away enlightened on some of the struggles that growing up in our generation brings.
We’re really proud of what we have achieved and through your support, we will be able to take our musical to Edinburgh and continue to challenge these problems in a way we hope will reach and inform as many people as possible. Your support is crucial and every bit of support we receive will make such a difference.
