A struggling pub owner realises the strength of comminuty

Plot

Mikey and Frank are the owners of the bar Il Monde, their first successful business. In the wake of COVID 19 they are struggling with the debts they occurred during the lockdowns. We follow them throughout the story as they make harsh decisions for the bar and are faced with choices that could either save or ruin everything. However, with the help of their only staff member as well as some regulars, there may be a chance for things to turn around.

Some insight into our characters:

Mikey- He is a main focus in our film due to his optimistic beliefs about the future of the pub. You'll see how he has many outgoing ideas about how the pub can be saved, as well as his own opinions on how it should be run with a community focused feel.

Frank- He is the exact opposite of Mikey. With pessimistic views on the future of the pub. He questions Mikey's optimistic views with his realistic standards. You'll see how his realistic mindset for the pub affects the decisions that will be made and the outcome for the pub.

Who are we?

Hey! We are second year film students creating our project for our creative screen practice module. We are creating a classic short drama, hoping to convey the themes of community, struggling businesses and the effect of COVID 19 on the hospitality industry.

Cam Harris- co-producer, lighting design and editor

Deborah Edu- co-producer and sound design

Josh Watkins- director and scriptwriter

Scarlett Crespin- camera operator and cinematographer

Mimi Lindsay- props manager and costume/makeup design

Sonny Santangeli- set design and script supervisor

why are we doing this?

COVID 19 had an effect on everyone worldwide, however many people don't realize what that effect has/had on the hospitality industry. Our aim for this project is to show everyone that not only were peoples social lives affected due to the lockdown, but peoples livelihoods were in danger as well. Many local business went under due to the lockdowns and we want to spread awareness for any businesses that are still struggling in its wake.

Our film focuses on the power of community and how when people come together for a common cause, anything can happen. Your donations will help us to complete our vision for film that entices people to band together to support a common cause. Just as with our film, we aim to convince our audience of this community mindset so that people will start to consider how they themselves can support the struggling hospitality industry.

Where will the money go?

A rough estimate of how your donations will help us:

  • Venue hire - £100

This is so that we can use a real local pub in Reading to promote our ideals of supporting the local community.

  • Costume - £60

The costume is important to our film as it helps to use realistic hospitality standard uniforms.

  • Travel costs - £40

This is to help us cover costs of moving equipment to the filming location.

  • Props and set - £100

The set and props will include classic pub items including specialized menus for our film, design elements such as posters and also to add greenery to brighten the set.

  • Catering - £50

This is to help support our actors and crew members by having snacks and drinks for their long hours of filming.

  • Emergency funds - £100

Our emergency funds are dedicated to things out of our control, such as props breaking and being replaced, ordering more props that will enhance our film and any extra costs we did not foresee before filming.

If we raise any extra funds above our target, this money will be used by the University of Reading Film, Theatre and Television department to help promote our film and other films made by our fellow students.
